Senior Health Insurance Information Program (SHIIP)

SHIIP is a free service of the State of Iowa Insurance Division that assists seniors who have questions about Medicare supplemental insurance, explanation of Medicare benefits, and other health insurance issues.

CASI is a local sponsor of this program.

Referrals are made to the Senior Advocacy Coordinator who will call a volunteer.

Trained volunteers are available to assist a client.

Booklets are available through the SHIIP office in Des Moines. We have copies at CASI to mail or give out upon request.

Money Management Program

This program is a cooperative effort of AARP, the Iowa Department of Elder Affairs, and the Social Security Administration. Quarterly board meetings are held by the CASI Money Management Coordinator and participating agencies. CASI is the local sponsor.

The service helps low income, older or disabled adults who have difficulty budgeting, paying routine bills, and keeping track of financial matters. The program uses trained volunteers to assist the client on a monthly basis. Depending on the client's situation, they are offered two types of assistance. There is no charge to the client.

BILL PAYER: Provides budget set up, checkbook balancing, and bill paying services for clients who remain in control of their finances, but need help keeping their finances in order. Some clients are served on a short term basis, but the majority are served long term.

REPRESENTATIVE PAYEE: Volunteers are appointed by the Social Security Administration to manage a government benefit (usually a Social Security check), when the client has been determined to be incapable of handling their own funds. Their funds are deposited into a special account from which the clients expenses are paid by the payee.

The Senior Advocate completes the Money Management application and refers the client to the Money Management Coordinator, who will assign the client to a volunteer. The Senior Advocate may be asked to attend the initial meeting between the client, the Coordinator, and the volunteer.

"Listen to Me Read" Program Background Information:

In the spring of 1991 the "Listen to Me Read" pilot program was started with six volunteers in four target schools located in Davenport.

Goal:

To match senior community volunteers with students.

1. The volunteers go to a school and are placed with a specific teacher, who will then assign a child or children to spend time on a one-to-one basis with the volunteer. During this time, the children will read to the volunteer. As the child reads, the listener praises and encourages the student's efforts.

2. To provide volunteers that will help with special projects and/or other educational support needs of the students, as requested by the teaching staff.

Growth:

Since the program started, over 250 volunteers have participated in over 40 public, private, and religious schools located throughout Scott County.

Recognition and Awards:
  • State of Iowa and National Senior Center Achievement Awards in the Community Partnership Category
  • Bi-State Literacy Award
  • Helping Us Grow (HUG) Awards from the Davenport School District
